Central Europe - CELEBRATION 2000

Short Introduction
Due to a complicated tectonic evolution and a complex lithospheric structure in Central Europe, this region has been a subject to numerous geological and geophysical experiments already in the past. Recently, many refraction seismic experiments have been conducted in the region of Central Europe. These international experiments, such as CELEBRATION 2000 followed by the ALP 2002, SUDETES 2003 and BOHEMIA teleseismic experiment are bringing new insights into the structure and evolution of the lithosphere in this region. Two-dimensional density models were developed based on the simultaneous modelling of the surface heat flow, gravity and topography data.

The first 3-D lithospheric model of the Western Carpathian–Pannonian Basin region was developed here at CAU Kiel, Geophysics and Geoinformation Group, in the framework of this DFG project. The model was constructed using the Interactive Gravity and Magnetic Application System (IGMAS) by means of forward modelling of the Bouguer gravity anomaly. The model is constrained by seismic models from the above-mentioned experiments and other geophysical data. The thermal structure and density distribution in the shallow upper mantle were also estimated using a combination of petrological, geophysical, and mineral physics information – LitMod (Afonso, 2006). This approach is necessary if the more complicated structure of the Pannonian Basin is to be better constrained. As a result, the first 3-D gravity model of the region that combines various geophysical datasets and is consistent with petrological data was constrained. The results were published here.

The goal of the second part of this project is to construct an integrated geophysical-petrological 3-D model of the region, constrained by the latest seismic results. For this purpose the new versions of IGMAS (IGMAS+) and LitMod3D are applied.
