iSOIL: Interactions between soil related science - Linking geophysics, soil science and digital soil mapping

iSOIL project focuses on improving fast and reliable mapping of soil properties, soil functions and soil degradation threats. This requires the improvement as well as integration of geophysical and spectroscopic measurement techniques in combination with advanced soil sampling approaches, pedometrical and pedophysical approaches.

Objectives:

  • Development of new and the improvement of existing methods that include geophysical, spectroscopic and monitoring techniques.
  • Development, validation and evaluation of necessary concepts and strategies for the transfer of measured physical parameter distributions into soil maps.
  • Development of guidelines for target-oriented soil mapping realistic for end-users.
  • Dissemination of the technologies and concepts developed.

Our working group “near surface geophysics” at Kiel is involved in WP1, WP3 and WP7.

In WP1 we focus on developing and improving the mobile sensor platform for effective measurements of EMI, Gamma-spectrometry and GPR. This includes conducting of comparative measurements at various test sites to study the interference of the sensors and data quality.

In WP3 we study the links between geophysically measured parameters and static and dynamic soil parameters (geophysical pedo-transfer functions – GPTFs). Moreover, the possibility of assessing flow and transport properties of soils with geophysical parameters will be investigated.

In WP7 we will publish and disseminate the results to any potential end-user.
