measuring microseismic noise in Namibia...
purpose: obtain uncontaminated microseism timeseries for nonlinear timeseries analysis, see what's there...
measurements will take place from Aug. 15 - Sept. 15 2002 in cooperation with the
Geological Survey of Namibia.

We were able to register from Aug. 23 to Sept. 19 and first QC indicates data of exceptional quality (extremely low artificial noise) - details to follow here soon...

Simplified geological map of the Erongo. The Erongo Complex is an old volcano whose intrusive and subvolcanic complexes formed in the Cretaceous. Some intrusions reach deep into the crust and should serve well as antennas for microseismic signals. Indicated is the farm Etiromund where a seismometer will be deployed. Many thanks to Markus Wigand for the original map.

Photos of installation and site.

Final inspection before departure.  An almost perfect natural hole in a huge granite outcrop. Only insulation is still missing (and batteries of course).
OK, testing before closing the hole...  Final touches.
Thorny branches keep baboons away - this is no joke!  Some days later - is it recording something? Or: Listening to the Earth (this is boring).
